INEC takes legal action against 774 individuals for electoral offenses.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigeria Police Force, is set to prosecute 1,076 individuals arrested for electoral offences during the 2023 general elections. These arrests span across 35 states, with Ebonyi State recording the highest number of cases—64 cases involving 216 suspects. Edo State follows with 22 cases and 80 suspects, while Anambra State has 12 cases involving 66 suspects.

To facilitate these prosecutions, the NBA has committed 191 lawyers, including 16 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, to provide pro bono legal services. The offences range from culpable homicide and unlawful possession of firearms to snatching and destruction of INEC materials, possession of offensive weapons, misconduct at polling units, and theft of election results.

INEC has prepared 191 case files for prosecution. However, 26 case files have been returned to the police because the offences involved do not fall under electoral offences as defined by the Electoral Act 2022. Additionally, suspects in 22 cases are either at large or were never apprehended.

This initiative marks an unprecedented collaboration between INEC, the NBA, and the Nigeria Police Force, aiming to uphold the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process by ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
