Labour Unions Demand Reversal of Rivers State Emergency Rule

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu's recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling for its immediate reversal. In a joint statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo described the action as unconstitutional and a direct assault on democracy.

The labour unions argue that the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly violates Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution and sets a dangerous precedent by undermining the autonomy of state governments. They warn that such actions could erode constitutional governance and threaten the stability of the nation's democratic institutions.

Beyond the political implications, the NLC and TUC highlight potential socio-economic repercussions, including disrupted economic activities, job losses, and increased hardship for workers in both formal and informal sectors. They caution that the state of emergency could create an atmosphere of uncertainty, discouraging investment and slowing economic growth in Rivers State and beyond.

Emphasizing President Tinubu's background in political struggle, the unions urge him not to engage in actions reminiscent of military-era authoritarianism. They call for the immediate reversal of the state of emergency in the interest of democracy, economic stability, and the welfare of Nigerian workers.
