Rivers State Political Tensions Escalate Amid Governor's Peace Appeal

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to prioritize the interests of the state's citizens by embracing peace and fully implementing the recent Supreme Court verdict. The governor emphasized that peace and development are paramount for the well-being of Rivers State, stating, "The only thing that we owe this state is peace and development."

This appeal comes amid ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative branches in the state. On March 12, 2025, Governor Fubara was denied access to the Assembly premises when he attempted to present the 2025 budget, following the Supreme Court's directive to re-present it. Despite prior communication, the Assembly complex was locked upon his arrival, indicating unresolved disputes between the governor and the lawmakers.

The Supreme Court's judgment on February 28, 2025, reinstated Martins Amaewhule as the Speaker of the House and mandated the re-presentation of the 2025 budget. Governor Fubara has expressed his commitment to adhering to this verdict, urging all political actors to set aside past grievances for the state's progress.

In response to the escalating situation, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has voiced its support for Governor Fubara, cautioning against actions that could destabilize the state. The INC emphasized the importance of allowing the governor to focus on governance without undue interference.

Governor Fubara's call for peace underscores the critical need for collaboration among all branches of government to ensure the continued development and stability of Rivers State.
